Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

As we come close to the end of our letter from Paul to the Colossians, Paul makes a point to stress the importance of how we interact with unbelievers. Yesterday, we learned that God sets God-ordained opportunities in your way to demonstrate the love of Christ. Today, in verse six, Paul turns his attention to how we speak as he writes, “Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.”

Paul gives us two qualities that are important when we speak. He says our speech is to be gracious and attractive. Now, in the Bible, the word “grace” normally points to divine favor. However, in this context the word in the original Greek language means "pleasantness," "attractiveness," "charm," and "winsomeness." And the word “attractive” points to purity and wholesomeness. Other translations state that our speech is to be “seasoned with salt.” Considering the importance of salt in the ancient Greek culture, Paul could be emphasizing the need for our speech to be zestful and lively in our conversations.

And why do we need to have these two flavors when we speak? Paul says so that we will know how to answer everyone. In other words, each person is unique. Therefore, your conversation with each person should be as well.

So, your Simple Truth for today:  Unbelievers are always watching you, whether you realize it or not, and you never know when the Lord will present an opportunity for you to influence them with your words. Whatever questions they may have be sure to sprinkle your conversation with a dash of zest and liveliness always be ready to tell them the reason for your hope.

Have a blessed day. I’ll see you again tomorrow as we bring this letter to an end.
