JULIE:

Hey! Welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

In our previous podcasts, we have been exploring how God tests us by how we respond to His Word. Which brings us to the last two verses in James Chapter 1:26-27 which says in the NIV, “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.  Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

So, who is this religious person James is referring to here? The word "religious" in the original language means a person who fears or worships God, and if we keep this in context to the surrounding verses, it’s the idea of looking into God’s Word but deciding there’s not really much you need to change in your life. This is what James means when he says these people “consider themselves religious.”

James says there is one test you can take to see if you are that person James is speaking of here. The question is do you keep a tight rein on your tongue? In other words, do you gossip? Do you lie? Do you ever say something that hurts others?

If we can’t pass that test, then James says we are deceiving ourselves when we think nothing in our lives needs to change according to God’s Word.

So, what does a changed person look like? James gives us 2 things. One, do you help care for the less fortunate who can offer nothing to you in return? At the time of James’ writing, that was orphans and widows. Two, do you keep yourself from being polluted by the world? Do you live your life according to what God’s Word says or do you follow the ways of the world?

And that’s The Simple Truth.
